La Badessa di Castro di Stendhal

OGGI PARLIAMO UN PO’ DI LETTERATURA…
Lo sapevate che i Castelli romani hanno ispirato anche un romanzo breve di Stendhal, “La badessa di Castro.?
Ritenuto dai critici una sorta di prova generale per La Certosa di Parma.
La storia ha quasi sicuramente un fondamento storico. Pare, infatti, che Stendhal (amante della cultura e della storia italiana), durante un suo soggiorno in Italia nel 1833, si fosse ritrovato in possesso di alcune carte – messegli a disposizione da Teresa Caetani duchessa di Sermoneta – contenenti informazioni su pene capitali e relazioni di omicidi, entrambe di epoca rinascimentale.
Da questi curiosi documenti trasse impulso per la sua opera.
La voce narrante del romanzo utilizza l’artificio di tradurre un manoscritto italiano della seconda metà del XVI secolo, nel quale era descritto l’amore travagliato tra Elena di Campireali, una fanciulla di illustri origini di Albano, e Giulio Branciforte, figlio di un brigante protetto dai Colonna.
Nel racconto ci sono continui riferimenti al lago Albano (Castel Gandolfo) e alla foresta di Fajola, sfondo selvaggio della vicenda (probabilmente ispirata alla foresta di Ariccia, la “più bella foresta italiana”, come lo scrittore la definì nei suoi scritti del Grand Tour).
